Love and money in the aisles

Romance and finance have both blossomed for a young couple who work at Taupō Pak’nSave.

Charlie Simmons, 19, and Courtney Morison, 20, have already achieved what many dream of: home ownership.

Their $720,000 three-bedroom home in Taupō is just the beginning. Their next goal is to own their own supermarket before they turn 30.

Charlie and Courtney began their careers at the supermarket while still in school.

Charlie started at just 14-years-old, following in his father’s and his two older brothers’ footsteps, and worked his way up to Grocery Supervisor.

Love blossomed between Charlie and Courtney when they began dating during her final year of college, and Courtney joined the store’s deli department in 2022 after Charlie shared his goal to own his own home before he was 20.

Courtney is now the Deli Supervisor, a role that has developed her leadership skills and confidence.

“I love the fast-paced environment of the supermarket – the controlled chaos,” Charlie says.

Courtney said her job kept her “thinking and constantly prioritising.”

“When I started, I was very quiet and unsure of things. My manager saw potential in me, mentored me, and helped me grow into my role. I came in like clay, and she helped mould me.”

Store owner Chris said the business’ “greatest investment” was in their people.

“We’re committed to nurturing talent by providing clear career pathways, robust training, and real opportunities for growth.

“When we invest in our team members, we're not just building a stronger store—we're helping build brighter futures.

“I am so proud of these two – what they have achieved by themselves and together is truly inspiring and one of the greatest signoffs for my career as an owner.”

Their story shows what hard work and dedication can achieve.

Working full-time and saving diligently, the couple built a significant deposit, proving that young Kiwis can reach major financial milestones with the right mindset and opportunities.

Charlie has already begun Foodstuffs’ ownership training programme, working towards qualifications in Retail Excellence and Store Mastery, the stepping stones to becoming an owner-operator.

“If you put in the effort, take initiative, and show your drive, you’ll be rewarded with career progression and growth.”

As they balance their careers, home ownership, and personal aspirations – including Courtney’s passion for portrait painting – Charlie and Courtney prove that the path less travelled can lead to success.
