SH1 reopen and better than ever
The Tūrangi to Waiouru stretch of State Highway 1 has now reopened.

The Tūrangi to Waiouru stretch of State Highway 1 will reopen on Friday.

Two major detours north of Taupō
The section of State Highway 1 from Wairakei roundabout to Ātiamuri is now closed to traffic and not due to reopen for up to five weeks.

Work resumes around Control Gates Bridge
Mercury is about to begin the second phase of maintenance work for its Control Gates in Taupō, with traffic management in place.
Speed limit changes proposed for Taupō-Tūrangi route
The Taupō-Tūrangi road corridor is back in the news – though this time not for a road closing crash. Consultation is now open on the coalition government’s announcement that speed limits dropped in 2020 will revert to 100km/h on several of the country’s highways.
A truck stop with a difference
Motorists on the East Taupō Arterial (ETA) route will have to take care over the coming months as work gets underway on installing weigh-in scales and other technology in the road to monitor trucks.
