Pop-Up Cinema returns to Taupō

Pop-Up Cinema is making a return to Taupō with its first movie sessions of 2025, including te reo and English versions of Moana 2.

Pop-Up Cinema organiser Nicola de Lautour thought the initiative would conclude at the end of 2024, but she decided to continue offering movie sessions while discussions around a permanent cinema solution for Taupō continued.

“We’re thrilled to provide the community with the closest thing possible to a true cinema experience. With Starlight Cinema’s famous popcorn, Kona Kones’ delicious ice cream, and a fully stocked venue bar, moviegoers can enjoy all the elements of a traditional movie night.”

Moana 2 is the first movie that Disney has released in both English and te reo Māori.

The event at the Great Lake Centre Theatre on Sunday, March 16,  will feature two major films, with Moana Reo Māori 2, Moana 2 and Wicked.

The 2024 release of Moana 2 marked a significant milestone, as the first time Disney has released a film in both English and Te Reo Māori simultaneously in cinemas.

Nicola says the opportunity to see the beloved characters of Moana return to the big screen in both languages is expected to attract strong interest from audiences in Taupō.

As with previous Pop-Up Cinema events, tickets must be pre-purchased and are available now at popupcinema.co.nz.

The charity partner for this session is the Taupō Food Bank, and attendees are encouraged to bring a spread such as peanut butter or jam to support local families in need throughout the winter months.

“With a diverse movie selection and a strong community focus, the return of Pop-Up Cinema promises to be a highlight for local film lovers.”

Session times: 1.30pm: Moana Reo Māori 2 (PG). 4.00pm: Moana 2 (PG). 6.30pm Wicked (PG)
