Taupō in a spin over disc golf
Over the last week, Taupō has welcomed, entertained, challenged and befriended world disc golf royalty at the, now legendary, Spa Park Disc Golf Course.
Some of the best disc golfers were at Spa Park to show everyone how it’s done.
The Taupō Disc Golf Club, in partnership with the Tour Down Under, hosted the 2025 Taupō Classic presented by Cosana Honey last weekend.
Taupō club president Ken Harris said it was the feature event of a five-week tour series that was held during the disc golfing off-season in the Northern Hemisphere.
“We were fortunate to play host to the strongest ever field of disc golfers to ever grace a New Zealand course.”
There were about 20 players in the world top 100, including Ezra Robinson, who has the third highest PDGA rating in the world, and five-time World Champion Juliana Korver.
“There was no shortage of autographs being signed and photos with disc golfing heroes being taken,” Harris said.
The event even gained same-day media coverage with the Go Throw Disc Golf media company providing coverage available on its YouTube channel.
“New Zealand disc golfers are pinching themselves at their luck.”
He said the tournament was a showcase of “how incredibly beautiful and how unbelievably challenging Spa Park can be”.
“Tournament director Steve Lawson put together the most difficult course layout ever conceived in the park, challenging the best that had travelled from the USA to compete.
“Even more importantly, the event organising committee made certain all competitors, from the amateur divisions on up to the top professionals, felt the love of the Taupō disc golfing community.”
Aidan Scott won the Mixed Pro Open Division, and Disc Golf Pro Tour Rookie of the Year Emily Weatherman took out the Female Open Division.
